Earth’s Most Precious Resource

Over the last 300 years, world population has increased sevenfold, but water use has increased by 35 times. Since 1950, the amount of annually renewable fresh water available per human being has fallen by more than half.

While domestic users in rich countries tend to be wasteful in their use of water, regarding it as essentially free and plentiful, they play only a small part in total water use. On the other hand, the quality of water needed for domestic use is much higher than needed for industry or farming.

Although 70% of the Earth is covered by seawater and about 3% by ice, neither of these is easily transformed into usable water. Less than 1% of the Earth’s total water resources are usable for drinking, farming or industry.

As a general rule, 80 litres of water per person a day are enough for a reasonable quality of life, but the regional differences are considerable. An American uses 400 litres, while an inhabitant of Burundi may have to survive on 10 litres or less.

Consumption is much higher where pipelines are laid than in regions where water has to be carried from a well. Thus the provision of piped water services greatly increases water use.

It is difficult to establish precise figures for safe drinking water, but it is thought that 1.3 billion people worldwide do not have this basic service. Not surprisingly, the problem is much worse in rural areas than in towns. Dirty water is the world’s biggest health risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 10 million people died annually from polluted drinking water from the beginning of the 1990s.

LONDON

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about nine million.

Traditionally the historical centre of London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other and seem to belong to different epochs.

The heart of London is the City, its financial and business center with the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange, numerous banks, offices and firms. There are some famous sights in the City including St. Paul’s Cathedral, the greatest of English churches, the Mansion House, an official residence of the Lord Mayor and, of course, the Tower of London. In the past it was a fortress, a palace and a state prison. Now it is a popular museum.

Westminster is the part of London connected with royalty and government. Buckingham Palace is the British monarch’s main residence in London.

The Westminster Palace or the Houses of Parliament is the seat of the British Parliament. This architectural complex contains the universal symbol of London, Big Ben.

Close to the Houses of Parliament stands Westminster Abbey. In Westminster Abbey most British monarchs have been crowned.

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It is the symbol of wealth and luxury. The largest department stores, cinemas and hotels are situated here. There are about 40 theaters, several concert halls, many museums and the best galleries.

Trafalgar Square is the geographical center of London. It was named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Not far away is the British Museum — the biggest museum in London which contains a priceless collection of ancient manuscripts, coins, sculptures and is famous for its library.

The East End of London is very important to the country’s commerce. There is the Port of London here. The East End markets are famous throughout the world.

A SEA STORY (after W. W. Jacobs)

We asked our friend Captain Brown one evening to tell us something interesting about his voyages, and he told us the following story.

“It was fifteen years ago, when I was a mate on a ship which was going to New York. We were having a very good voyage. The captain came up to me one morning and said: “Last night I heard such a strange thing that I don’t know what to do about it. I couldn’t sleep and I heard a voice which said in my ear: “Sail north-north-west. Sail north-north-west. We must sail in that direc­tion and find out.»

“I’m very sorry, captain,” I said, “but I think you had too much to eat last night and that’s why you couldn’t sleep.”   

The captain was very angry.

“I didn’t eat much yesterday,” he said, “and I heard the strange voice three times, sir.”

        The captain told the men to sail north-north-west. One of the men saw something black in the sea the next day.  The captain looked through his glasses and said to me: “There’s small boat there with a man in it. I was right last night, wasn’t I? We must save him.”

Soon we reached the small boat and saw that the man in it was fast asleep. He went on sleeping while we took him into our boat and sailed towards the ship. When the man was aboard the ship, he suddenly opened his eyes and cried out loudly, “Where am I? Where’s my boat?”

“Hallo!” said the captain. “I’m very pleased that we had been able to save you.”

“Did you order your men to take me out of my boat while I was sleeping?” the man asked.

“Of course,” answered the happy captain. “Did you want to be drowned in your little boat?”

“Look here,” said the man, “My name’s Captain Wilson and I am making a  record voyage from New York to Liverpool in a small boat …”

The Moscow Law Academy

The history of the Moscow Law Academy of the Russian Federation started in 1975 when a higher law school was founded and the first  cadets enrolled. Some  time later the school developed into the institute and in the late 90s it became the Academy. The Academy has a very qualified staff of teachers and lecturers many of whom have a wide practical experience.

The students of the Academy study such subjects as Civil Law, Criminal Law, Criminalistics, Crime Psychology and others. Regular lectures, seminars, classes and training are offered to the students of the Academy. Some students specialize in law, others choose crime detection or crime investigation. The graduates of the Academy work in various militia and related services.

The Academy is doing its best to make its students skilled professionals to cope with all the tasks they may face in future.

The British Isles
The British Isles lie about the same distance from the Equator as that part of Russia lying between Moscow and Volgograd. The climate of the country, however, is quite different from that of the European part of Russia. It is much milder. Even in the most northern parts of Scotland, snow never lies very long on the ground in winter, while in the South of England, snow falls only a few times during the winter and never lies long. Besides this, the rivers never freeze. In England there is much rain and fog in winter, and few sunny days. Summers are never very hot, and there is often very much rain. Generally speaking, Great Britain is a very damp country.
One of the chef reasons for this dampness is that a continuous stream of warm water, called the Gulf Stream, crosses the Atlantic Ocean from the warm South and washes the western and northern coast of the country. The Gulf Stream flows on past Northern Scotland, Norway and to the northern coasts of Russia. It is due to the Gulf Stream that our port Murmansk is free of ice all through the winter.

A business firm controls four important elements of marketing which are called a marketing mix.
A firm’s marketing mix is the combination of the product, the price of the product, the means for its distribution, and the promotion of the product to reach a firm’s target market.
A firm can vary its marketing mix by changing any one or more of these ingredients. Thus a firm may use one marketing mix to reach one target market and a second, somewhat different marketing mix, to reach another target market. For example, most automakers produce several different types of vehicles and aim them at different market segments based on age and income.
1) The product ingredient of the marketing mix includes decisions about the product’s design, brand name, packaging, warranties, and the like.
2) The pricing ingredient includes both base prices and discounts of various kinds. Pricing decisions are intended to achieve particular goals, such as to maximize profit or even to make room for new models. The rebates offered by automobile manufacturers are a pricing strategy developed to boost low auto sales.
3) The distribution ingredient involves not only transportation and storage but also the selection of intermediaries.
4) The promotion ingredient focuses on providing information to target markets. The major forms of promotion include advertising and publicity.
The «ingredients» of the marketing mix are controllable elements. A firm can vary each of them to suit its organizational goals, marketing goals, and target markets.

« I’m very sorry, captain, » I said, « but I think you had too much to eat last night and that’s why you couldn’t sleep».
The captain was very angry.
« I didn’t eat much yesterday, » he said, « and I heard the strange voice three times, sir.».
The captain told the men to sail north-north-west. One of the men saw something black in the sea the next day. The captain looked through his glasses and said to me: « There’s small boat there with a man in it. I was right last night, wasn’t I? We must save him».
Soon we reached the small boat and saw that the man in it was fast asleep. He went on sleeping while we took him into our boat and sailed towards the ship. When the man was aboard the ship, he suddenly opened his eyes and cried out loudly, « Where am I? Where’s my boat? »
«Hallo! » said the captain. « I’m very pleased that we had been able to save you».
« Did you order your men to take me out of my boat while I was sleeping? » the man asked.
« Of course, » answered the happy captain. « Did you want to be drowned in your little boat? »
« Look here, » said the man, « My name’s Captain Wilson and I am making a record voyage from New York to Liverpool in a small boat…»

The British Isles
The British Isles lie about the same distance from the Equator as that part of Russia lying between Moscow and Volgograd. The climate of the country, however, is quite different from that of the European part of Russia. It is much milder. Even in the most northern parts of Scotland, snow never lies very long on the ground in winter, while in the South of England, snow falls only a few times during the winter and never lies long. Besides this, the rivers never freeze. In England there is much rain and fog in winter, and few sunny days. Summers are never very hot, and there is often very much rain. Generally speaking, Great Britain is a very damp country.
One of the chef reasons for this dampness is that a continuous stream of warm water, called the Gulf Stream, crosses the Atlantic Ocean from the warm South and washes the western and northern coast of the country. The Gulf Stream flows on past Northern Scotland, Norway and to the northern coasts of Russia. It is due to the Gulf Stream that our port Murmansk is free of ice all through the winter.
